This holiday season, enjoy delicious treats while helping our patients!
Meet Makenzie.
At 10 years old she’s bright, bubbly and – most importantly – brave. When she was six, Makenzie was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), a rare cancer that causes immune cells to attack parts of the body. Family and friends who rallied around Makenzie during her treatment dubbed her “Mighty Makenzie,” and the nickname couldn’t be more fitting.
She has bravely faced chemotherapy treatment, 11 surgeries, a few neck braces, wearing a halo brace (a circular metal brace that attaches to the skull to keep the bones the neck and spine from moving) for seven months, wound care, physical therapy and countless appointments. So much is unknown about her type of cancer and currenlty, there is no cure. Every day, Makenzie takes a daily chemotherapy pill in order to keep the LCH at bay until science catches up and figures out a better solution.
That doesn't stop her though! Makenzie is on a mission to cure pediatric cancer, and despite her young age she’s already made a mighty impact for other kids fighting the disease. Makenzie and her team of family, friends and supporters have raised more than $40,000 for Cook Children’s Hematology and Oncology Center and Makenzie proudly shares her story to bring awareness to LCH and childhood cancer.
“I like to inspire other people to be generous because it can help a lot of kids like me, and it makes me feel really happy and warm inside,” says Makenzie.
This holiday season, we are proud to partner with Leaves Bakery & Books to raise funds and awareness for kids fighting cancer in our communities. Makenzie helped create the sweetest treat for your holiday season.
